A baby Indri was born in the Palmarium reserve! |

May 31st, 2006, birth of an Indri baby in the Palmarium preserve,  Called ‘’babakoto’’ in the Madacasgan language, the Indri Indri is the biggest species of lemurs: black and white, he looks a bit like a panda bear – he is as tall as a 6 years old child and his weight is around 7kg.
Originally, the babakoto lived exclusively in aloft situated forests, notably in the area of Andasibe, but has then been brought in the Eastern preserves, such as the Palmarium, a botanic park forest, where several kinds of lemurs live freely.
The birth of a lemur outside it’s natural habitation may thus be considered as an important event, especially as this newborn baby is already the second one since the preserve exists. This allows to keep hope alive concerning the preservation of this endangered species.

 Located on 50ha in the heart of Pangalanes channel, the Palmarium preserve shelters about 10 lemurs, amongst them the famous Indri. In 1996, his introduction was tempted with a first male animal was tempted. 6 years later, as part of the wildlife preservation of this species (present in only 3 Madagascan sites), a female animal has been brought in. Today, the birth of a first Indri baby gives witness of this initiative’s success and is a promising sign so as to this jeopardised species’ safeguard.
In 2004, May, 24th, our guide Sylvain was amazed to discover an Indri baby born just some hours ago. His eyes were still closed, the naked baby was swaddeled in its’ mother’s pelt. 18 months passed by before the birth of this miracle which will bewitch all nature lovers. After a couple of days, this wonderful baby shouted out for the first time, less ear-piercing than his parents but as much promising!
